We got home from Cape Cod (to Cape Elizabeth, or as I like to refer to it, "Cape to Cape") on Sunday afternoon just before the rain began. The sun peeked one last time through the gap between the clouds and the horizon as the storm approached. As I write this, I look out the window and am reminded that I need to see how the basement is holding up in all this rain.

The colors of winter are beginning to give way to the colors of spring here on the coast of Maine. Though I have friends who are still skiing to the north, I'm happy to seeing less of the color gray both outside and on my palette.

It's not often that I'll paint winter scenes when outside the grass is beginning to turn green and the snow shovel is already packed behind a whole lot of other things I won't use until next winter. However, I had wanted to paint this particular image--a little glimpse of the bay just off of Stonington, Maine that stretches down to Isle Au Haut. We often do a sea kayak trip in early June out of Stonington, so to see it covered in snow was quite different.

Took the long way home again yesterday afternoon, even after staying late sometimes it's completely refreshing to change the scenery. We are immersed in rain today, so in a sense this is the image of things yet to come.

Got up early this weekend to check the surf down at Higgins Beach. I'm never one to be excited about getting up before the sunrise for any reason, especially when it involves immersing oneself into water warmed by Arctic sub-currents. Had to stop on the way to the beach as we crossed the marsh for a couple of sunrise images. Fantastic. As for the surfing, we came home and made coffee.

Daylight savings is such a mixed blessing sometimes. Great to have sunshine later in the day, but I'm still adjusting to the darkness when I get up at in the morning! Still, it gives me a whole lot more opportunity to catch the sunset in some interesting places, like here at Scarborough Marsh.

The storms of late have finally passed, just in time for Daylight Savings. The weather here has been glorious and already things are busy down on the beach. The lobstering season will get into high gear here very shortly. I had seen this truck down at the put-in earlier in the afternoon.

One of the wonderful aspects of Portland, is the combination of wood and brick architecture. All in all, the city has had four major fires and during the last one, the West End of the city was rebuilt almost entirely in brick. The East End however remains almost completely constructed of wood. This particular view, from a friend's house, is just one of many little wonderful glimpses where the sun slices through the streets to land on corners like this.

I probably see one of the most famous lighthouses in America at least every other day of the week. There are even days here at the house when I can hear its foghorn. Maine's Portland Head Light is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in the world--and it's easy to see why. The setting is as picturesque as it gets and the keeper's house and its accompanying tower are both stunning architectural structures. Perhaps its why I chose to focus on what had been at one time a bit of a utility shed and a passageway from the house to the light. Sometimes leaving out the big stuff is more interesting.

The weather continues to be glorious here on the Maine coast. It was an absolute joy to grab the easel and paints and head around the corner to Two Lights Road. This particular farmhouse isn't far from the two lighthouses made famous in Hopper's, "Two Lights" painting. Maybe that's why mine seems to have such a Hopper feel to it too?

Well this latest string of glorious weather (and today is no exception) certainly has me believeing winter has packed and gone for the foreseeable future. A little rain here last week would surely have been snow worthy of shoveling not long ago.

On our way home from Quebec a couple of weeks ago, we were both excited to get back as quick as we could--it had been days since we had seen our son and the first time since we had gone away without him. There is a lot of Maine still life to paint, but this trip wasn't going to be the trip. But while we stopped for gas at the first town on this side of the border, Jackman. I was able to explore within reasonable distance from the gas station for a few moments.

I find myself on many late afternoons exploring parts of Greater Portland that I may at one time really not had good reason to explore. In large part, it's due to the fact that I'm showing my 18 month old son in the backseat things like trains, planes, trucks, and boats. We often take the long way home past the airport, train station, bus terminal, and tugboat yard. Sometimes it's not clear to me who is more interested in these places, but now when the authorities stop me I can just point to my binky-faced accomplice with the funny colored clothes and sippy cup in hand strapped into the backseat.
