Outbound, 6" x 8", Oil on Panel, 2010

I spent this morning glued to the radio in the studio, listening to the United States play Algeria in the World Cup. Today was a key match for the U.S. team. If they lost, it would have been the end of their trip to the World Cup. The game remained scoreless for the entire 90 minutes, and I worked on finishing this painting while they played. I couldn't help but think that somehow my painting of a boat leaving harbor (with a big U.S. flag on its fantail) was adversely affecting the team. I was relieved and overjoyed when, in the 91st minute of the game, Landon Donovan scored his game winning goal to keep their hopes alive. Maybe this painting then isn't about a boat leaving, but rather continuing on its journey.

Presumpscot, 6" x 8", Oil on Panel, 2010

One of the great things about being both a landscape painter and a flyfisherman, is that very often the two passions work together in harmony. This was the case over the weekend not far from home on the Presumpscot River. Fishing is really a matter of choosing a beautiful location and then standing there only to be occassionally disturbed by the matter of catching a fish. Painting on the other hand, is often a study of that same beautiful place and then trying to capture (or catch) it in a painting. Both are fleeting and require immense amount of patience. Did I ever tell you about the book I hope to write one day titled, "Beautiful Places To Stand"?
