This barn belongs to one of my favorite houses in Maine. At one time, it must have been a part of a large saltwater farm along the water in Falmouth, Maine. Both the house and the barn are great antiques of the Maine coast.

This weekend I was out on both bikes; the motorcycle and the bicycle। I ended up riding through Cumberland, a small rural town not far from home, down some roads I had never been down before--fantastic scenery, farms, and old farmhouses that made me want to stop and paint. Unfortunately, I hadn't brought my paints with me on either ride, but thankfully had brought the camera. This image of this farmhouse front porch is from the early morning bicycle ride on Sunday--a 50 miler! So stopping to photograph was a welcome break.

These two tugs were moved to the far end of the Maine State Pier to make room for a cruise ship that came to town. When we first moved to Portland, you could wander around the waterfront just about anywhere you pleased to go, but now the tugyard is gated. It's only when the cruise ships come in and take their spot can you get this close.

There is a typically a lot to see while sailing on the coast of Maine; puffins, finback whales, seals, porpoise, and wonderful, old wooden schooners like these two. There was a time when Penobscot Bay would have been filled with boats like these (and larger). It would have looked like the water equivalent of i-95 with ships moving up and down the bay into the Penobscot River, transporting supplies to and from all corners of the globe.

Went to visit some friends down the coast earlier this week and got a quick peak at the view from the top of Mt. Battie in Camden. The hills literally run right down to the sea on this part of the coast--much more dramatic than here in the flatlands of Cape Elizabeth, and the bicycling is much, much tougher too!

It never ceases to amaze me how schooners the size of this one, manage to hide in small coves and behind trees here on the Maine coast.

Portland's fishing fleet has dwindled recently. Though the lobster fishery is still as strong as ever, the groundfishing fleet has largely moved south to Massachusetts where they stand to make more profit because of more lenient fishing regulations. Still, the waterfront has a few of these large, greasy working boats left to keep the romance of the Portland fisherman going.

Took my first ever long distance, overnight motorcycle trip last weekend. The forecast wasn't promising, so must days were half days and the thunderstorms would roll in mid-afternoon. It's easy to forget how large this state is and what a range of scenery you can see in a few short hours of travel, not to mention the moose. We had a fantastic campsite Saturday night on Rangely Lake--not a bad view!

There are lots of great little nooks and crannies to uncover in the little city of Portland. I really liked the lighting and the staircase in this view, especially how your eye was led up to the old Paper Co. sign. I don't think paper has been made in Portland for a long, long time.

The weather here in Maine has become very, very summer like. So much so that you could almost miss winter. The days are hot and humid and the air is very still. But inside this icehouse on Portland's waterfront, the temperature is very cool. The catch is brought in off the boats and loaded into containers filled with ice. The whole building is chilly, and standing outside its door is a bit of a break from the heat.

Time to mix it up a bit and work from some images that I've been meaning to get to for some time now. This particular image is from a recent trip to Jackson, Wyoming to visit my sister who has lived in this part of the country for more than ten years.

The favorite food of lobster: herring. And this corner of the pier is where the herring is put into bins for distribution to fishermen.
