Bow Wave, 6" x 6", Oil on Panel, 2007

Sunshine lights up the port side of this ship as it enters Portland Harbor. Its bow wave is clear and white in the afternoon sun.

Bottom Paint, 6" x 6", Oil on Panel, 2007
Lying at anchor in Portland Harbor, this giant dwarfs the tiny islands of Casco Bay. The ships in the harbor often appear out of place, but there is something wonderful about the contrast of this mass of steel and oil and man-madeness against the backdrop of small, rocky islands covered with pine trees.

Pump Out, 6" x 6", Oil on Panel, 2007
Photos and paintings just never seem to do these ships justice when it comes to their absolutely massive size. Even at its berth here in in South Portland, there is a sense of danger being near it, though it would take a team of tugboats just to move it an inch before it got underway. I'm always a bit conflicted about these ships--I love watching slide in and out of Portland Harbor, and the orchestrated maneuvers of the tugs to put them on or pull them off the docks. And yet, they strike me as these giant pollution machines, making their own mess, and carrying fuel for us landlubbers to keep the mess going. But you can't escape that they are an icon of the times.
