Midtown Reflection, 15" x 24", Oil on Panel, 2007
On a particularly hot afternoon in Manhattan this past summer, we took an absolute thrill ride down the Hudson aboard the Circle Line's newest addition to the fleet, "The Beast"; a very fast passenger tour boat piloted by Captain Mad Dog. "Beast" whisks you from the 42nd Street Piers to the Statue of Liberty in 20 minutes at breakneck speeds, with tunes like AC/DC's Back in Black and Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries to pass the time. Nothing at all like the traditional Circle Line cruise. It was an absolute gas, and if you're ever in the city in the good weather I highly recommend it. My in-laws however, sitting near the rear of the boat, didn't think as much. By the time we got off the boat they were soaked, mostly because of a great watergun fight between the captain and his first mate (part of the act, I'm sure). You're probably asking what any of this has to do with painting. Well, as the son-in-law's whose idea it was to venture down the Hudson in this manner, I was not their favorite person in the Big Apple after that ride. So I hung back and continued to photograph the city as we/they sloshed their way back to the hotel. This painting, is from an image taken on the west side of the city. Mostly I was interested in the reflection of the old building in the new one. And that's the whole story.
